This scheme is the first phase of the larger Colin Town Centre Masterplan, a blueprint involving the creation of a commercially viable & sustainable town centre for Colin. This was a complex, bespoke project & the first of its kind in Northern Ireland. The overarching objective of the project was to provide a transport hub that fulfils the needs of the Belfast Rapid Transit (BRT) system & helps to develop Colin into a thriving Urban Village.
The state-of-the-art facility has been designed to improve accessibility & connectivity with other parts of Belfast as well as providing much needed community facilities & shared space via a new town square for community events. This innovative project is the first shared use transport & community hub in Northern Ireland.
The hub building is a unique in-situ concrete framed structure with complex geometry curving and rising in various directions presenting many challenges during both design and construction. The concrete roof structure was designed using a finite element model to accommodate the complex geometry. The interior of the building was constructed using an innovative technique that made use of in-situ, pigmented, board marked concrete - coloured red to evoke tones of Victorian brickwork that define many of Belfast’s historic city streets.
